Tyne and Wear Metro delays after train held at Monument due to passenger’s fall

There are currently delays on the service of around 30 minutes due to the medical incident in Newcastle city centre

The Tyne and Wear Metro service has been impacted by delays after a train was held at Monument due to a female passenger’s fall. There are currently delays on the service of around 30 minutes due to the medical incident in Newcastle city centre.

At around 12.30pm on Monday, the woman suffered the fall while on board the carriage, and subsequently the train was brought to a stop and briefly taken out of service. It was then taken to Pelaw so that she could be treated by a waiting ambulance crew.

Thankfully, the woman who fell has not been seriously injured, and despite some gaps in service, Metro trains are still running to all destinations. Nexus has assured customers that staff are working to resolve the issue.

A Nexus spokesperson said: “A train was held at Monument Metro station today, Monday 6 October, at around 12.30pm after a female customer suffered a fall on board the carriage.

“The train was taken out of service and is now at Pelaw so that an ambulance crew can treat her. She has not been seriously injured.

“The incident has created some gaps in service but trains are running to all destinations. We are working to resolve the issue and will resume the timetable as soon as possible.”

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called to a person who had fallen while travelling on a Metro shortly after 12pm this afternoon.

“We dispatched a double crewed ambulance, which met the train at Pelaw station. One patient was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.”
