Barclays ‘failing the people’ as customers forced to obey ‘nonsensical’ cash rule

Barclays has been accused of ‘failing the people you are supposed to service’ after a customer was banned

Barclays has clarified its position on a particular payment restriction after facing accusations of implementing a ‘cynical’ policy

The high street giant was accused of “failing the people you are supposed to service” by one bank customer. They posted on X: “Just got told at @Barclays bank that I cannot deposit cash into my partner’s account. Has to be paid into mine and transferred. Control of us via money is already here. #NoToDigitalID”

Barclays wrote back: “I hope you’re doing okay today. Thanks for getting in contact with us here, I’m really sorry for any frustration caused. I’d love to chat about this further, please can you come over to DM and also let me know your full name and post code? -Jess”

A X user said: “Firstly why are @Barclaycard responding. This is a @Barclays bank issue. 2ndly. No, I don’t want to DM. I want to publicly point out that by denying a cash deposit you are failing the people you are supposed to service. It’s a crap policy with BS justification”

Barclays replied: “I appreciate you’d rather not to discuss this in DM with us. If you’d prefer, you can find all the other ways you can contact us about this here https://barclays.co.uk/help/contact-us/ Once we’re speaking on a secure channel we’ll do all we can to help further. -Jess”

The X user replied: “What CAN you do? I was told it was policy. If it is then it is a Cynical one. If it isn’t then why was i told that? If you can have discretion then why have the policy? You are a medium for people with money. It is not your place to tell us how we can use it legally.”

Barclays said: “You may not pay cash into another’s bank account. This is a measure used to prevent fraud and money laundering. As you can imagine we are heavily regulated by the financial conduct authority which means we follow certain rules.

“You can pay money into your own account and transfer to someone electronically. You can also give them the cash and they can deposit it into their account. I appreciate you’re unhappy and you can absolutely find out how to reach out about this here: https://barclays.co.uk/help/contact-us/
