Bolton gets Royal Mail’s new ‘post boxes of the future’

Three of the new post boxes have already been installed across the town – on Highfield Road, Chorley New Road and Sunny Bank Road – with more expected to follow in the coming weeks.

The new “post boxes of the future” let customers send parcels up to the size of a shoebox and request proof of posting through the Royal Mail app, without visiting a post office.

They also include built-in scanners and drawers powered by a solar panel fitted to the roof.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Our new post boxes of the future will offer another convenient way for customers in Bolton and elsewhere to access Royal Mail’s services, alongside home delivery and collection, our Customer Service Points, Post Office branches, lockers and Collect+ parcel shops.”

The boxes replace existing post boxes in the same locations, with each installation taking several weeks to complete due to measuring and retrofitting work.

Royal Mail says the new design represents the biggest redesign of the iconic red post box in 175 years and is part of a drive to make sending and receiving parcels more convenient.

The company is also expanding its delivery network, with more than 2,000 parcel lockers, 7,500 Collect+ stores, 11,500 Post Office branches, and now 1,400 parcel post boxes available nationwide.
