Princess Beatrice was left “in tears every day” after a “disastrous” moment involving her father Prince Andrew, who was last week stripped of his royal titles
Princess Beatrice was reportedly “left in tears” following a “disastrous” incident involving Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, which she is said to have had a hand in organising. The younger brother of King Charles was stripped of his remaining Royal titles last week after enduring weeks of intense scrutiny over his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Princess Beatrice and sister Eugenie are however said to be “more upset with” their mother, Sarah Ferguson, after she called him a “supreme friend” and apologised for criticising him in an interview. The sisters, who are both close with their parents, have not commented on the latest developments, but are said to have left the UK.
It comes six years after Andrew faces a disastrous interview on Newsnight, months after Epstein was found dead in his jail cell while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges. It’s reported that Beatrice was part of a meeting with her father and several Newsnight executives that led to the ill-fated interview.
Sam McAlister, one of the executives present at the meeting, penned a memoir that was adapted into the Netflix drama Scoop. She claims that Beatrice “asked sensible questions” ahead of the interview.
According to Sam, she felt sympathy for the princess as her father “discussed his relationship” with the disgraced millionaire. Despite the concerns, Andrew chose to proceed with the interview, which turned out to be a disaster, as reported by The Mirror, reports the Express.
Following the fallout from the interview, he withdrew from public life and was stripped of his military affiliations and Royal titles. Beatrice was reportedly left “mortified” that she didn’t do more to prevent the interview from taking place.
According to the Mail on Sunday, she hosted a 36th birthday celebration for then-fiancé now husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi shortly after the interview was broadcast. The source revealed Beatrice was “quite tearful at times”, stating: “In fact, Beatrice has been in tears every day since the interview went out.”
Meanwhile, another insider revealed to the publication: “Both Sarah and Andrew rely on Beatrice’s judgement a lot when it comes to dealing with the public as she’s got an old head on young shoulders. You can’t really blame Beatrice because I think the odds were stacked against her on this one.”
The Newsnight interview witnessed Andrew making assertions about his inability to perspire and recounting a family outing to Pizza Express in Woking. Andrew also maintained he “ceased contact” with Epstein after becoming aware he was “under investigation” in 2006.
Andrew subsequently went to stay with Epstein in December 2010. He maintained he visited with the “sole purpose” of informing the businessman it was “inappropriate to be seen together”.
Last month however reports surfaced that Andrew continued to maintain contact with Epstein. This emerges as a recent memoir from the late Virginia Giuffre alleges she had sex with Andrew three times when she was 17 – in New York, London, and the US Virgin Islands.
Andrew nevertheless refutes the allegations. Last week Buckingham Palace confirmed the King had “initiated a formal process to remove the style, titles and honours of Prince Andrew” and served notice on Royal Lodge, his 30-room mansion.
“These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him,” the statement continued.
The Palace also voiced its backing for victims of “any and all forms of abuse”. Beatrice, along with her sister Eugenie, are set to retain their princess titles.
