Volcano Theatre sets the stage for a hilarious and bold Christmas production

Volcano Theatre presents Silent Night, Raging Eve, an uproarious, one-of-a-kind Christmas performance that looks at the pressures that come with the festive season, ageing, and society’s beauty standards.

Running from 25 November to 20 December, this brand-new solo production is created and performed by Joanna Simpkins. Sharing her take on the festive season through the eyes of Eve, the show follows a Christmas party that soon spirals into the best and worst festive celebration, as she experiences the swirl of emotions many have to navigate through the Christmas period.

Silent Night, Raging Eve delves into the feelings that come with being part of a culture obsessed with youth and perfection, especially for women, against the backdrop of a season that demands joy. As Eve’s night unravels, audiences can expect the show to convey relatable social commentary through comedy. The show develops on the themes of Juiced to Death, which Simpkins performed earlier this year at Volcano Theatre.

Paul Davies, Artistic Director at Volcano Theatre Company, said:

“We wanted to offer something different this Christmas, a show that still retains the festivities, but also shines a light on experiences and emotions many of us go through.

“Joanna’s new production offers exactly that, subverting the traditional picture-perfect festive narrative.”

Originally from Hull, Joanna trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and spent several years working with Welsh Theatre companies. Her previous works have included classical texts, physical theatre, and contemporary plays. Silent Night Raging Eve marks her second self-produced show.

“The idea for Silent Night, Raging Eve came as I grew older, and I seemed to tap into a rage within that I hadn’t felt before,” said Joanna Simpkins.

“This rage was magnified by the pressures of ageing and societal beauty standards on women. Silent Night, Raging Eve also explores the absurdity and comical side of Christmas.”
