Man found dead in South West named locally as newspaper editor

A man in his 70s who police confirmed they found dead at a property in Cornwall has been named locally.

Town officials said the family of Toni Carver, the editor of the St Ives Times and Echo, were “looking to the future”.

CornwallLive reported how emergency services were called to a property on High Street, St Ives, shortly after 9am on Friday (November 14).

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that the body of a man in his 70s was located in the property. The force said that after preliminary investigations the death was not being treated as suspicious and a file was being prepared for HM Coroner.

A statement has since been released by the St Ives Town Council which has identified the deceased as 77-year-old Toni Carver, proprietor of the St Ives Times and Echo newspaper and historic local family business St Ives Printing & Publishing, based in the High Street.

The council stated: “Following the unexpected death of Toni Carver, Editor of the Times and Echo, on Friday 14th November 2025, we have been asked by the family to let the community and businesses of St Ives know, that they are looking to the future.

“The Times and Echo continues to be open for business and welcomes your valued support and custom.

“The Town Council sends its deep condolences and warmest good wishes to the family at this incredibly difficult time.”

According to the newspaper’s website MR Carver wrote how the St Ives Printing 7 Publishing Company was established by John and Virginia Carver in 1951 “for the express purpose of purchasing one of two local newspapers then published in St Ives, The St Ives Times”.

It continued: “The purchase of the town’s other newspaper, The Western Echo in 1957 led to the merger that created today’s newspaper The St Ives Times & Echo.” The firm also publishes books and pamphlets, covering biographies and local history and also offers office supplies in its local store.
