A church on Glasgow’s south side that dates back to 1843 has burned down overnight. Fire crews were called to reports of a blaze at Pollokshaws Parish Church on Shawbridge Street in the early hours of Sunday morning (December 7).
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to the scene at around 2.44am on Sunday, as flames destroyed much of the 182-year-old church and part of the building collapsed.
SFRS has confirmed that three appliances in total were dispatched to the scene, and as of 11.30am, they are still in attendance with Shawbridge Street currently closed.
Initially, two appliances were dispatched after reports of the building blaze, but another was called to the scene due to the severity of the fire.
Flats on either side of the church were evacuated, and no injuries have been reported.
Firefighters have been tackling the flames from outside the church due to danger of further building collapse, and it has not been confirmed that the blaze has been fully extinguished as of yet.
Three fire appliances and a high-reach appliance are still on the scene.
