Royal Mail update blow as 92 postcodes in new list where ‘deliveries not guaranteed’

Delivery offices around the country have been hit by sickness and other issues meaning letters and parcels might not arrive in time

Royal Mail has issued a new update today as the UK is hit by major delivery problems. Delivery offices around the country have been hit by sickness and other issues, the organisation has admitted with 15 postcodes in Scotland badly impacted.

Today it issued a list of 92 postcodes where people are not being guaranteed deliveries. It could mean key cards and parcels won’t arrive at homes before Christmas.

Royal Mail hired about 20,000 extra workers to help transport, sort and deliver mail over the busy festive season.

Royal Mail said: “We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. In a small number of local offices, this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors. In those cases, we will rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers. We also provide targeted support to those offices to address their challenges and restore our service to the high standard our customers would normally receive.

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. We will regularly update customers on the offices most impacted.”

The Royal Mail was bought by new owners in 2024, but the sale came with a pledge to maintain their obligations to deliver first class mail six days a week.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “We take any reports of delay seriously and will further investigate these concerns. We want to reassure customers that the overwhelming majority of mail is being delivered on time – where a route is affected we prioritise any delayed items the following day.”

Royal Mail said it was taking action to improve the reliability of its services, including by hiring more staff and supporting its delivery offices.

It is also preparing to introduce changes that will see it scrap second class deliveries on Saturdays and switch the service to every other weekday.

It has been running pilots for the new delivery model and is aiming to continue rolling it out from early next year.
