Exact days to avoid when booking flights for your next holiday

Flight booking experts at Skyscanner unveiled the best and worst days to book holiday flights earlier this year

Getting affordable flight deals can seem challenging, but help is available. Skyscanner recently revealed insights into the optimal and worst times to buy international tickets, highlighting seasonal trends and specific weekdays.

The travel search engine examined historical data to uncover these trends and also tackled a common debate in holiday planning: whether it’s preferable to book early or wait for last-minute deals. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this, as Skyscanner said that it mainly depends on the route.

While quieter journeys or off-peak days may experience price drops as the departure date nears, popular routes are likely to see prices climb sharply. Regardless of the season, Fridays and Sundays are consistently the worst days to book flights because of high demand. In contrast, statistics indicate that the lowest fares are typically found on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when fewer bookings are made.

For the latest money-saving tips, shopping and consumer news, go to the new Everything Money website.

“Based on past pricing trends, fares have dropped on Tuesday mornings after Monday deal releases,” Skyscanner wrote earlier this year, according to the Daily Record.

When asked if prices decrease nearer a departure date, it added: “Sometimes, especially if seats are still available. “But prices also tend to rise as departure nears. Last-minute deals exist, but they’re never guaranteed.

“You can also use the Skyscanner Savings Generator to find the best time to book flights based on your route.” Skyscanner suggested that travellers book short-haul flights between one and three months ahead of time to prevent disappointment.

For long-haul trips, it’s advisable to purchase tickets two to six months prior to departure. Users wanting to track changing flight prices can use Skyscanner’s alert system.

To enable it, choose a preferred route and click the ‘Get Price Alerts’ button at the top left of the website. To utilise this feature, you’ll need a Skyscanner account, as alerts will be sent to the email address linked to your account. Google also offers a similar alert system in its flight price-tracking tool.

Google’s current advice states: “You can track flight prices for specific dates or, if your plans are flexible, any dates. To get flight alerts for a specific round trip, choose your dates and flights and select Search.

“Then, you can turn on price tracking.” Click here for more details about Skyscanner’s price-tracking tool.
