Watford got an early present from the Government in the form of increased funding for both Watford and Hertfordshire councils.

More money for Watford is always good and is welcome news indeed. That’s in stark contrast to the 14 years in which the Conservatives were in office, five years of which was spent in coalition with the Liberal Democrats when government funding to help councils provide services such as bin collections, libraries, schools, fire and rescue, parks, youth services and to maintain roads was slashed. That inevitably led to cuts and council tax increases.
Pre-Christmas I visited several local schools and did question and answer sessions.
I popped into Watford’s Royal Mail Sorting Office to thank the posties for everything they do, especially their flat-out performance at this time of year.
I did a reading at St Mary’s Church and also got into the spirit of the season visiting Watford Hospital having transformed myself into Father Christmas. That surprised a few people and delighted many. The chocolate gifts went down a storm with children, parents and hard-working staff alike.
Duties in Parliament continued until recess shortly before Christmas and during the budget debate I welcomed the increase in the national minimum wage, praised cuts to interest rates meaning cheaper mortgages and investment in capital projects and the NHS.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year.
