Update on Huddersfield postman run over by own van as fund set up for him

Local people in Crosland Moor are raising money for a postman after he was badly injured when he was run over by his own van.

The driver, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries on Monday December 29 after he was struck by the Royal Mail van on Blackmoorfoot Road at Crosland Moor, Huddersfield.

The runaway van was stopped from rolling further down the hill by a driver in a Ford Ka. Supporters of the Crosland Moor Community Group are rallying round to raise £1,000 for the popular postman.

In a post on JustGiving, the organiser said the community had been “shaken” by the “frightening accident”.

“While carrying out his usual round – something he’s done for so many of us day in, day out – he was tragically run over by his own post van.

“He has suffered fractured ribs, a punctured lung, and multiple cuts and bruises. Thankfully, he is now receiving medical care, but he has a long and painful recovery ahead.

“Anyone who knows him will tell you he’s more than ‘just the postie’ – he’s a familiar face, a friendly smile, and someone who shows up in all weathers to keep our community connected. Now it’s our turn to show up for him.

“In the chaos of the incident, something truly remarkable also happened. Three individuals in nearby vehicles put themselves in danger to stop the post van from rolling backwards and potentially causing even more serious injuries or damage. Their quick thinking and bravery may well have prevented a far worse outcome.”

The fund has been set up to support the injured postman during his recovery, and help to ease the financial and emotional strain.

Donors added their words of support for the injured postman.

One said: “He is a true gentleman and excellent postie. Well done to those who stopped a further accident.”

Another donor added: “Wishing our postie a speedy and safe recovery. A big shout to the hero who helped prevent this accident being much worse.”

The fund has raised £245 so far from 16 supporters and can be found here.
