Royal Mail lorry recovered after crash near Berriedale in heavy snow that forced closure of A9

The A9 was at a standstill on Tuesday morning as Police Scotland coordinated efforts to recover a Royal Mail lorry that had crashed in snow and ice just south of Berriedale.

New images from the scene show the large postal vehicle being rescued on the notorious stretch of road.

The road, about half a mile south of Berriedale, was to be closed in both directions between 9am and 11am yesterday, police confirmed, but it was not reopened until closer to midday.

Confirming the road had reopened, police thanked drivers for their patience.

The incident occurred amid amber weather warnings for snow and ice across the far north and most of the Highlands and north-east, with driving conditions described as dangerous.

Yellow warnings continue for most of the country today, with motorists urged to take extra care or consider whether their journeys are necessary.
