Royal Mail have opened an “eco-friendly” new delivery office in Leyton. The office, located on the Orient Industrial Park, replaces the previous Leyton High Road site with what is deemed a “more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient operation”.

Serving consumers and businesses across Leyton and Clapton, the new office features new electric vehicle chargers for the 32-strong electric delivery fleet, an air source heat pump to heat the mail sorting area and a cycle shelter to promote staff cycling to work.

The air source heat pump works by transferring heat from the outside air to the water in a central heating system and is over three times more energy efficient than a traditional gas or oil boiler.

Leyton and Wanstead MP Calvin Bailey MBE cut the ribbon and toured the facilities today, while meeting the posties who deliver across Leyton and Wanstead and visited the yard to see the EV fleet. The electrification of delivery vans is an important part of Royal Mail’s strategy to lower emissions from its vehicles, and the company has the UK’s largest electric delivery fleet of over 8,000 vans.

Bailey said: “It’s great to engage with the posties who keep our society running, and learn about the technologies making Royal Mail delivery more efficient. This is the same tech being supported through the Government’s Warm Homes Plan – our businesses, infrastructure and homes can all benefit from lower bills if we get on board with these opportunities.”

Tonton Mulobo, lead customer operations manager for Leyton, said: “Our posties are very excited about our brand-new office! It’s packed with modern facilities that make work better for the team and better for the environment. This investment shows Royal Mail’s commitment to creating a workplace that supports our people while working towards our Net-Zero goals.”

In June, Royal Mail announced a strong reduction in its average carbon emissions per parcel delivered by a fifth (20%) in the past year, with the company having pledged to reach net-zero by 2040 as part of its ‘steps to zero’ environment strategy and has set interim targets to 2030.
