North Baddesley man walks 247 miles to fundraise for RSPCA

Nick Thorne, a postal worker of North Baddesley, completed the month-long sponsored challenge in October 2025, walking, hiking, and running more than 247 miles, an effort inspired by his adopted dog, Joe.

Mr Thorne said: “Joe is doing so well, he’s an absolute joy to share our home with.

“We couldn’t imagine our lives without him.

“He’s coming on so well at training classes and he had a wonderful time with our family over the festive period, opening presents and generally being spoiled with toys, treats and fuss.

“I have had dogs all my life and couldn’t be without them.

“The only time they hurt you is when they leave you, and losing Holly, who was 14 years old, and Max, our beautiful puppy who tragically died from a liver condition, completely broke our hearts.

“Spotting Joe and then going to meet him was a turning point and we knew instantly he would bring so much joy back to our lives.

“He truly mended our broken hearts.”

Joe, a spaniel cross rescued by the RSPCA, was found abandoned in a crate by the side of the road.

Mr Thorne and his wife Andrea adopted him from the RSPCA Ashley Heath Animal Centre in Ringwood.

The fundraiser was part of the RSPCA’s wider ‘Big Give Back to Animals’ campaign, which highlights rising levels of animal abandonment and the crucial need for public donations.

Mr Thorne set an initial goal of reaching 150 miles but surpassed it in just 18 days.

He has worked for Royal Mail for 39 years and said staying active has always been part of his life.

He said: “Being a postie of course I have been used to walking miles and miles every day for work over the last almost four decades.

“Once I retire in a few years, walking will continue to be something me and my wife Andrea will enjoy together with our dogs.”

The RSPCA is encouraging more people to take part in fundraising this spring through their ‘50 Miles in March’ challenge.
