Keir Starmer is right to stand up to Trump

It is right that Keir Starmer stand up for his country and not get conscripted into Trump’s war without a plan or an exit strategy, says Record View.

The Prime Minister’s refusal to give the US a blank cheque over the Iran war has had the effect of poking the snake.

Donald Trump has dismissed Starmer as “no Churchill” and a “loser” while mocking the UK’s belated, limited support for his adventurism.

Fans of the historic alliance between the UK and America will lament the recent nosedive and the juvenile sniping from the Oval Office.

Shared sacrifices in two world wars, as well as being joined at the hip during the Cold War, made the US and the UK the greatest of friends.

But the US intervention in Iran cannot be seen in isolation from the irresponsibility and recklessness of its president.

In the last few weeks, Trump has effectively engineered regime change in Venezuela, threatened Greenland and caused turmoil in every country in the Middle East.

He lurches from one foreign policy move to another, without seeing any of them through.

Little wonder that Starmer, who was a critic of the Iraq war, is reluctant to jump into Trump’s small tent.

Trump will be gone in less than three years and may be a lame duck president soon if the Republicans lose the House of Representatives to the Democrats.

Starmer’s unpopularity in the UK stems from decisions made on the domestic front and his failure to sell a vision of change.

His performance on the world stage – calm and rational – has been more impressive.

His job is to stand up for his country and not get conscripted into a conflict without a plan or an exit strategy.

Delivery crucial

So much planning goes into holding an election that many people take for granted.

Organising the vote on polling day, counting the votes and ensuring a safe result are all critical.

But elections are not a one-day exercise and the campaign includes a series of important milestones.

Guaranteeing a sound postal vote system is crucial, as is ensuring candidate and party election materials are delivered.

The Royal Mail has a key role to play and the postal service must have the confidence of its clients.

Trade union concerns about the impact of staffing issues on the integrity of the ballot must be taken seriously.

STUC general secretary Roz Foyer has written to the UK Government outlining her fears and asking for assurances.

An urgent meeting should take place with the Royal Mail and ministers to ensure any potential issues are nipped in the bud.
