A York MP says city postal workers are struggling so much that crucial mail is being left behind.
Rachael Maskell said that she’d been told that letters weren’t being processed properly in York and claimed Royal Mail is “a failed business”.
Her comments came during a Westminster debate on the performance of the organisation.
Ms Maskell, the Labour MP for York Central, said: “I commend York’s posties for the incredible work that they do. I met with them recently to hear their stories.
“One said to me: ‘I’m bringing to your attention the dire state we find ourselves in due to the business not caring about customers’ mail.
“‘Mail gets left every day in our office – birthday cards, hospital letters, everything. The staff here are exhausted as we keep getting unachievable work loads.’”
The debate comes after it was revealed that the price of first-class stamps would increase by 10p to £1.80 from 7 April. Last month Royal Mail said it had missed delivery targets once again in the most recent quarter.
The last time Royal Mail met its annual target for delivering first-class post on time was in 2019-20.
Ms Maskell said the Royal Mail now had “a two-tier workforce, with wages below the real living wage, conditions falling, and the price of stamps increasing to the point of unaffordability.
“We know that the billionaire leader of the company is now striving to cut the universal service obligation. This is a failed business that the Government must pick up and drive forward.”
She said the service should be nationalised. “As with rail, we know that the best efficiency and value would come from the Government bringing Royal Mail back into public hands for the public good, and keeping its public commitment.
“Let us be bold and brave, and let’s have it back.”
