Electrifying news for Loganair

There’s been great excitement at Scotland’s airline Loganair as it joined Royal Mail, and electric aerospace company BETA Technologies to launch electric flight demonstrations across Royal Mail’s Scottish mail flight routes.

The first of a series of demonstration flights across Scotland’s regional airport network took place between Glasgow and Dundee, with further flights planned between Aberdeen, Inverness, Wick and Orkney.

Flights will carry representative letters and parcels, replicating the daily mail flights Loganair operates so Royal Mail can deliver to Orkney and the wider Scottish Highlands and Islands.

BETA’s ALIA CTOL is an all-electric conventional takeoff and landing aircraft designed for regional cargo and passenger operations. It requires no new airport infrastructure, operates from existing runways and recharges in approximately 20-40 minutes using BETA’s fast-charging system.

With a maximum demonstrated range of 336 nautical miles and a payload capacity of up to 560kg, the aircraft is well matched to the high-frequency regional routes that define Loganair’s Scottish network.

Loganair CEO Luke Farajallah said on LinkedIn: “Well it’s been an incredible day in Glasgow with the first flight of the BETA Technologies  Alia CX300 in Loganair Limited branding and livery. We are very proud to be the first airline in Europe to fly an all-electric aircraft within a commercial network.

“The next few days will see us embark upon trials, use case analysis, and data gathering as the aircraft moves around Scotland. These are early days but very exciting ones and we are looking forward with great anticipation to the future of electric flight.”

Meanwhile Loganair launched its Spring Tartan Sale as seasonal routes return. The promotion offers 17% off flights on selected seats across the Loganair network, allowing travellers to take advantage of a range of seasonal services connecting regional airports with popular summer destinations.

Among the routes returning for the summer season are Loganair’s services from Glasgow and Newcastle to Newquay, offering convenient access to Cornwall’s coastline between May and September.

The airline is also operating several new seasonal connections from Jersey, including flights to Norwich, East Midlands, and Paris Charles de Gaulle, expanding connectivity between the Channel Islands, the UK mainland and Europe throughout the summer.

In Scotland, Loganair’s Dundee to Kirkwall and Dundee to Sumburgh routes will run through the summer months, helping connect the Northern Isles with mainland Scotland while also providing onward connections via Loganair’s wider network.

The airline will also operate its distinctive Bergen-Sumburgh route between May and August, linking Shetland with Norway’s west coast during the summer travel season.

Customers can receive 17% off the net fare on selected seats by using the promotional code SALE17 when booking between 19 March and 31 March 2026, for travel from 1 May onwards.

Loganair was named the most punctual major airline for UK arrivals and departures in 2025 (January-September) by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), with 81% of its flights arriving and departing on time – significantly above the industry average of 72%. CAA’s analysis covers the 20 airlines carrying the most passengers at UK airports.
