Elaine Pardoe began her career aged 17 and said she will miss staff who are “one big family”
A senior sister is hanging up her uniform next week after 53 years of nursing. Elaine Pardoe, 69, retires from her post in the plastics department at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital on 31 March.
Elaine started her nursing career in 1973 as a 17-year-old Buttercup nurse at Beverley Westwood Hospital. She continued to develop her knowledge and skills by completing her enrolled nurse training.
After Beverley Westwood Hospital closed, Elaine continued as an enrolled nurse within Orthopaedics at Castle Hill in Cottingham. She then went on to complete her conversion course to become a registered nurse.
Elaine secured the senior sister role in plastics surgery, and during this time has worked in a number of different departments across Castle Hill and Hull Royal with the Plastic Surgery Team.
She said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time working in the Trust, and I’ve loved my job every single day. The time is right for me to retire.
“One of the biggest changes I’ve seen in nursing is the change in hierarchy, as matrons used to manage the whole ward. The hospitals have got much busier over the years, but I’ve also seen lots of improvements.
“The biggest thing I will miss is the staff I work with. We’re like one big family and they’re an absolutely amazing team.
“I’ve also really enjoyed meeting all the patients, they just make me smile every day. I’m proud of myself for what I’ve achieved. I set up the Plastics Trauma Unit at Castle Hill and Hull Royal.
“My whole journey has been memorable. I would definitely encourage people to get into nursing, it’s a very rewarding job.”
Her team said: “Elaine’s drive and determination is incredible. She strives every day to improve the services delivered to the patients within plastics.
“Elaine is a true advocate for the patients and staff that work within the department, and she will be very much missed by all. Congratulations Elaine on your achievements. We hope you enjoy your well-deserved retirement and you’ll be missed by all.”
Elaine is looking forward to spending time with her husband and two sons. She has already planned some family holidays.
