‘We understand how unpleasant this experience has been’
Families have been confronted with ‘raw sewage’ spilling out in their neighbourhood. The foul mess has been spewed across Trentham’s Paddock Rise and the adjoining Longton Road in what has been branded a ‘disgraceful’ situation.
Now Severn Trent Water say specialist equipment will be needed to fix the problem as bosses have apologised for the ‘unpleasant’ scene greeting residents. Families in the area say the grim incident unfolded at around 7.30pm on Tuesday evening with a crew subsequently sent out.
Images from the road show what appears to be excrement in among the mess. Engineers have put the incident down to a blockage caused by roots in the pipe.
Stoke-on-Trent South MP Dr Allison Gardner says she is ‘appalled’ at what has confronted residents.
She said: “I am aware of the sewage leak in Trentham by Paddock Rise and Longton Road, and I want to reassure constituents that I am taking urgent action.
“I have immediately contacted Severn Trent and the relevant environmental authorities to ensure this issue is escalated and resolved as a matter of priority. Severn Trent are investigating the leak, and will jetvac the pipes to clear any blockages.
“Quite frankly, what we are seeing is disgraceful, and I am appalled that my constituents are being subjected to this. Access to clean, safe infrastructure is a basic right, and I will be demanding a full explanation as to how this occurred and what will be done to prevent a recurrence.”
A spokesperson for Severn Trent said: “Our team has identified a blockage caused by roots in the pipe, which has restricted the flow and led to the drain overflow. While our crew was able to partially relieve the issue during their visit yesterday, they were unable to fully remove tree roots because of the heavy rain and will need TO return with specialist equipment to complete the job.
“We will be attending the site today to carry out further works and a thorough clean-up of the site. We understand how unpleasant this experience has been, and we’re very sorry for any issues caused.”
