A big hole, a school closed and a road shut: Clear-up begins after the flood

The big fix and clean-up is underway in York today (Friday) after roads were flooded by a major water main burst last night.

As YorkMix reported, a section of the aptly named Water Lane was flooded and sealed off from close to its junction with Clifton to Spalding Avenue.

Today, most of the water has gone, but the disruption continues.

Here’s the situation on Friday:

  • Water Lane has reopened
  • Clifton Green Primary School has closed due to the incident
  • Kingsway North is closed at the end nearest to Water Lane.

The mains burst has left a large hole at the end of Kingsway North. It is barricaded off and Yorkshire Water engineers are working to repair it.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said: “We’re working as quickly as we can to fix the issue on Water Lane/Kingsway North and want to thank our customers for their patience.

“We hope to have the road reopen in the next few days.”

There is still some standing water near to the pedestrian crossing on Water Lane, so motorists are being asked to drive with care.

Last night, North Yorkshire Police reported it as a sinkhole. Today, the Yorkshire Water spokesperson clarified that it wasn’t a sinkhole. Instead the burst water main blew a hole in the road.

The water pipe was fixed last night.

“Some customers had no water or low pressure for a short period of time – but all supply was restored within two hours,” the spokesperson said.

There’s a lot of mud and silt left on both the roads and pavements. City of York Council cleaning vehicles are at the scene too.
