With Christmas now mere days away, we’re getting down to the nitty gritty of our plans for the big day.

And with so much to distract us, sometimes the mundane elements of life can fall by the wayside, leaving us caught short. With wrapping paper, food waste and bottles all sure to pile up at a rapid rate during the festive season, it’s important to know what dates to put out the bins – especially with timings regularly changed over the Christmas and New Year season.

The festive collection calendar officially comes into force on Monday (December 22). To keep on top of it, we’ve put together a quick guide of the changes to bin collections this year in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

Aberdeen

Residents with household wheeled bin collections on Thursday 25 December and Thursday 1 January will receive a collection on Saturday 27 December and Saturday 3 January respectively.

Meanwhile Aberdeen’s brown bin collections are currently suspended over the festive period for four weeks, beginning on Monday, December 15.

A number of vehicles have been identified as having manufacturing faults, and due to an ongoing shortage of mechanics and wider delays in vehicle parts, Aberdeen City Council claims the suspension will allow for wheeled and communal bin collections to be prioritised.

Brown bins are used for food and garden waste with the council stating households can use general waste bins for food waste during the suspension. Residents will also be unable to report any missed brown bin collections in the coming four weeks.

The local authority added that garden waste collections are non-statutory and demand is lower during the winter months.

Brown bin collections will resume as normal from Tuesday 13 January.

Household Waste and Recycling Centres’ will remain open and accepting excess waste throughout the festive period (apart from Christmas Day and New Years Day).

Updates will be shared on the Council website here and through social media channels.

Bin collections

  • Bins scheduled for collection on Thursday, December 25 will be collected on Sunday, December 28, marking the first Christmas season of special Sunday collections by our staff.
  • Friday, December 26 bins will be collected on Monday, December 29.
  • Thursday, January 1 bins will be collected Sunday, January 4.
  • Friday, January 2 bins will be collected on Monday, January 5.

On your bin collection day for the festive period only (Monday 22 December to Monday 5 January):

  • If your bin is not emptied by 4.45pm, take it back in.
  • If a black lid bin is presented and missed, up to two extra black bags of excess waste will be collected on the next scheduled collection day.
  • If a recycling bin is presented, missed, and not tagged, extra recycling of the same type will be collected on its next scheduled collection day.

Details of missed collections will appear on the council’s website: www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/binsdisruptions.

Household recycling centres across the festive period

For households only, if you find yourself accumulating additional recycling and waste, household recycling centres are available to visit at the following times:

  • Wednesday, December 24: close at 3pm and last entry for all booked vehicles at 2:30pm.
  • Thursday, December 25: closed all day.
  • Friday, December 26: closed all day.
  • Wednesday, December 31: close at 3pm and last entry for all booked vehicles at 2:30pm.
  • Thursday, January 1: closed all day.
  • Friday, January 2: closed all day.

The council has asked all visitors to household recycling centres to check the website prior to travelling in case of a change in opening times, a need to book, a closure, to see what can be recycled, and the type of vehicles that are welcomed.

Residents have also been advised when visiting centres to arrive early enough to unload the vehicle before the lunchtime or end-of-day close.

Booking is required for all vehicles visiting Inverurie and Westhill household recycling centres. Only commercial-type vehicles and vehicles with a trailer must book at all other recycling centres.

If you do need to book, arrive on time as entry may be refused to anyone arriving outside of their given time slot. Booking slots for bulky uplifts are closed from Monday, December 22 to Friday, January 9.

Ewan Wallace, Environment and Sustainability Head of Service, said: “As we head into the colder months, we want to thank you in advance for your support of our hard-working collection crews and household recycling centre staff. Right now, they are focused on providing a great service for residents and trade customers across Aberdeenshire.

“On any given four-week period, there are more than 498,000 collections to be made and we appreciate your patience and understanding if winter weather causes short-term disruptions to your bin collection schedule.”
