Activity centre for disadvantaged young people to be developed alongside Clydebank canal

A new activity centre is to be developed along Clydebank Canal in a bid to help disadvantaged young people in the area.

West Dunbartonshire Council has launched a procurement process to identify a contractor to develop the “modular” building which the local authority is contributing £200,000 towards.

A further £747,000 in funding is also being invested in the project by the Scottish Government.

The centre, which will be placed along the waterfront,  will be run by local group Y Sort.

The project aims to create an activity centre in the heart of Clydebank, to provide outdoor activities, training and support for the most disadvantaged young people in the area.

The activity centre will include a bike workshop and hire, storage, washing facilities, changing rooms and will also be available for use by local community groups.

An update was brought before the infrastructure, regeneration and economic development committee recently.

Labour councillor Lawrence O’Neil said: “Can I just clarify what type of community centre this will be given, that it is currently planned to sit beside cafe Roma but could be moved.

“I would like to know what type of buildings are in place there which can’t be moved?”

He was informed that the centre will be a ‘modular demountable building’ and will be designed in consultation with the contractor – which is still being decided.

A council officer explained: “If things change in Clydebank Town Centre in the future the centre can be relocated. It is like a portacabin but to call it a portacabin would give you the wrong impression.

“We are going through a procurement process. There are a number of suppliers of these containment buildings that we work with so that we have influence on the design, external appearance and the landscape around the building.

“We don’t know yet who will be selected to take that forward but it will be a modular type building rather than shipping containers.”
