A man who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson in Sheffield has been re-bailed for a fourth time. Johnson, 29, was fatally injured during a game between the Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers on October 28, 2023, after the blade of an ice hockey skate hit his neck.
He was later pronounced dead in hospital, and a post-mortem examination confirmed he died as a result of a neck injury. A man was arrested on November 14, 2023 on suspicion of manslaughter and was later bailed.
He has now been re-bailed until November 11, 2024 after the previous bail period, which began when bail was issued for the third time on June 26, expired. Suspects can be bailed for a maximum of 12 months in the UK, but any extension beyond nine months has to be applied for through magistrates’ court.
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “Our investigation is ongoing, and our thoughts remain with Adam’s family. If there are any developments in the investigation ahead of the new bail expiry date, these will be issued proactively on the South Yorkshire Police website.”
