A&E patients at Royal Bolton drops by more than 260 amid “Think Twice” campaign

MORE than 200 fewer patients went to A&E at Royal Bolton last month compared to the previous month.

But the number of patients was still higher by almost 3,000 in January 2022 compared with January 2021.

This comes with Bolton NHS Foundation Trust urging people to “think twice” before taking unnecessary trips to A&E in order to avoid putting extra strain on the hospital’s services over the winter months.

A statement issued by Bolton NHS Foundation earlier in the winter said: “We have a wide range of initiatives in place to help discharge patients, including our packages of care and the great work of our discharge team and admissions avoidance team, and in recent weeks have seen our total numbers of no criteria to reside patients decrease by roughly 20 per cent.”

NHS England Data shows that a total of 10,304 patients visited the A&E department in January compared to 10,572 the previous December.

But this was still around 35 per cent more than the 7,648 patients seen in January last year.

The majority of attendances last month were via major A&E departments, those with full resuscitation equipment and 24-hour consultant-led care, while 13 per cent were via minor injury units.
