All the shops closed on New Year’s Day including Aldi, Lidl, Boots, M&S and more

When you’ve woken up to the start of 2020 after a night out celebrating on New Year’s Eve, you might be wanting to nip out to the shops.

Perhaps you need something for that hangover, or maybe you’ve come down with the flu as a punishment for all that partying.

There might be no food in the house, or you need to get some nappies or other essentials.

Or maybe you just fancy getting out for a mooch around the January sales.

Whatever the reason, it’s no use walking or driving to the shops only to discover they are shut.

New Year’s Day is a bank holiday and you won’t find everywhere open as normal.

Banks are closed, there are no Royal Mail deliveries, and trains will be running reduced services. West Midlands Trains says it will operate a ‘Sunday service’ on January 1, so be sure to check if you are hoping to use public transport to get around or get to work.

Not all the shops and supermarkets are open either. Some of them are closed with staff taking a well-earned rest so they can enjoy the bank holiday (and recover from their own New Year’s Eve nights out).

Here are all the shops we know about that will be CLOSED on New Year’s Day this year.

Aldi

Aldi says all its stores will be closed on New Year’s Day this year.

That means you won’t be able to pop into your nearest Aldi to grab essentials or rummage in the SpecialBuys section.

But stores will be open as usual from 8am on Thursday January 2.

The German budget chain opened its first UK supermarket in the Stechford area of Birmingham, back in April 1990.

Today there are 30 stores in the Birmingham area and 800 more across the rest of the UK.

Lidl

All of Lidl’s supermarkets outside the M25 will be closed on New Year’s Day.

They will be reopening at normal hours on Thursday January 2.

There are around a dozen Lidl stores in the Birmingham area including branches in Bordesley Green, Balsall Heath, Acocks Green, Yardley, Erdington and Winson Green.

Boots

Several branches of Boots will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Most of the Birmingham city centre branches such as those in the Bullring, New Street, High Street and on New Street station concourse are all open on January 1.

But other branches of Boots are closed, including Brindleyplace, Pershore Road (Edgbaston), Alcester Road (Moseley), Stratford Road (Sparkhill), Weoley Castle Square (Selly Oak), Stoney Lane (Yardley), Warwick Road (Acocks Green), Kingsbury Road (Erdington), Monyhull Hall Road (Kings Norton), Prince of Wales Lane (Warstock), Alcester Road South (Kings Heath) and Bristol Road South (Northfield).

Marks and Spencer

M&S branches across Birmingham will be closed on New Year’s Day, reopening as normal on Thursday January 2.

Local stores include New Street station, High Street (city centre), High Street (Harborne), St Mary’s Row (Moseley), One Stop Shopping Park (Perry Barr), Selly Oak Shopping Park and Astle Retail Park (West Bromwich). All are shut on January 1.

John Lewis

Most branches of department store chain John Lewis are closed on New Year’s Day.

That includes the 250,000 sq ft flagship store that opened at Grand Central in Birmingham in 2015 and is the biggest branch outside London.

It will reopen as usual at 9am on Thursday January 2.

The "Waitrose effect" can help add over £36,000 to a property price

Waitrose

Not all branches of Waitrose are open.

The supermarket says: “A number of our convenience shops will open on New Year’s Day, with average opening hours of 7am – 10pm, or 11am – 7pm.”

Shoppers are loving the £4 blinds from Wilko

Wilko

Wilko branches are closed on New Year’s Day.

These include the Wilko stores at One Stop Shopping Centre, Perry Barr; Fort Shopping Park, Erdington; Selly Oak Shopping Park; High Street, Kings Heath; Warwick Road, Acocks Green; Grosvenor Centre, Northfield; and Red Rose Centre, Sutton Coldfield.

It’s worth mentioning that Wickes – which closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day – will be open as usual on New Year’s Day if you desperately need DIY tools or equipment. B&Q is also open.
