Tinned food and toiletries are on its wanted list as it continues to provide a much-needed service during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Chairman Clive Gibson, said: “As summer approaches, the weather improves and vaccinations surge ahead people can be forgiven for thinking that things are going to quickly return to normal.
“However, we are not seeing a drop in demand and do not expect to for some time to come.
“So, please keep donating as much food as you can, as often as you can, to help us continue to meet that demand and reach out to the most vulnerable in our community.”
Alnwick District Food Bank has now been operating at 400% capacity, and occasionally higher, for 12 months.
During that time it has delivered just over 3,000 food parcels – that is over 6,500 bags of food, 30,000 meals, to clients.
This food has gone to approximately 350 households, around 1,000 people in Alnwick and the surrounding districts.
Clive says this would not have been possible without the dedication of over 30 volunteers who have worked tirelessly to deliver this service, even during the lockdowns.
The group would also like to thank the local community for its fantastic support through donations as well as logistical and infrastructure support.
Amongst those who have helped they would like to thank: Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, LIDL, Turnbulls Butchers, Newcastle Building Society, Royal Mail, Alnwick Round Table, Alnwick Lions, Alnwick Town Council, Mayor Lynda Wearn, Northumberland County Council, NEED, the staff at the Lindisfarne Adult Education Centre and an army of local charities, businesses, churches, sports teams and individuals who have rallied round to provide donations which enabled it to meet the need within the community.
“At the end of an extraordinary year all at the Alnwick District Food Bank would like to say thankyou to everyone who has dug deep and helped us rise to an exceptional challenge, a challenge that is ongoing,” said Clive.
The charity is also requesting that no more donations of pasta are made.
The dramatic events of the pandemic are having a major impact on many of our local valued advertisers and consequently the advertising that we receive. We are now more reliant than ever on your support through buying our newspaper. If you can, please pick up a copy of the Northumberland Gazette when you are at the shops. Thank you.
