Amazon launches on-foot deliveries in London

Amazon is copying Royal Mail in using on-foot delivery personnel for many of its deliveries in Central London. These staff, similar to posties, will be the first such deployed by Amazon in the UK.

At the same time, Amazon has launched a fleet of e-cargo-bikes in London as it seeks to improve efficiency and tackle its carbon emissions.

Both efforts in London will have the effect of increasing the volume of deliveries the online giant can make, while reducing the carbon emissions made per parcel. The on-foot delivery personnel will be the first such in the UK used by Amazon.

A side-effect of this move will be to enhance the shopping experience for Amazon shoppers, and it is likely to improve Amazon’s sales further in the areas in which it delivers by bike and on foot.

According to Statista, Amazon’s gross revenues in the are set to hit $199.9bn (£168.88bn) in 2022, and is set to see a CAGR growth of 12.6% between 2022 and 2025.

The move also fits with Amazon’s aims to reach net-zero carbon by 2040, an ambitious goal for one of the world’s largest companies. Amazon has been investing heavily in renewable energy projects in the last few years that has helped it reduce its impact on the climate. It originally aimed to run on 100% renewable energy by 2030 but is now expected to achieve this target by 2025.
