Amazon ‘put Royal Mail to shame’ as post disruption continues

Disruption to Royal Mail deliveries continues as we head into Christmas week.

Last week the postal service admitted staffing problems due to Covid-19 had impacted offices around the country including St Helens, Warrington and New Ferry in Wirral.

While issues at the New Ferry delivery office appear to have resolved, the Upton office is now experiencing problems.

Royal Mail said: “In a small number of local offices this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as COVID-related self isolation, high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors.

“In those cases we will rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers.

One Wirral man said Amazon was putting Royal Mail “to shame” as the Christmas rush continues ahead of the big day on Saturday.

John Kelly told the ECHO: “Five days later my birthday post arrived despite family sending cards first class.

“It’s sad and a disgraceful service.

“I ordered many Christmas items from Amazon. What a company – [package was] there next day, delivered to family and friends.

“Put Royal Mail to shame.”

Amazon has been criticised in the past for its treatment of staff and delivery drivers as they meet the tough next day delivery demands.

Like Amazon, Royal Mail is a private company, but for most of its history, it was a public service operating as a government department. However, in 2015 the Government sold the last of its remaining shares in the company.

News of the disruption comes after the BBC reported that absence levels at the postal giant are almost double those seen in 2018.

A source said the internal situation is “horrific” and claimed: “It’s much worse than a normal Christmas.”

Current Royal Mail delivery offices affected (local offices in bold);

  • Belfast West DO (BT10 – BT12 and BT17)
  • Burnham On Crouch DO (CM0 8)
  • Chelmsford DO (CM1 to CM3)
  • Congleton DO (CW4 and CW12)
  • Cricklewood DO (NW2)
  • East Dulwich (SE22)
  • Eccles DO (M30)
  • Finsbury Park DO (N4 and N15)
  • Havant DO (PO9-10)
  • Henfield DO (BN5 and BN44)
  • Hornsey DO (N8)
  • Longton DO (ST3 and ST11)
  • Northwich DO (CW8 to CW9)
  • Rayleigh DO (SS6)
  • Shrewsbury DO (SY1 to SY5)
  • South Croydon DO (CR2)
  • St. Helens DO (WA9 to WA11)
  • Sydenham DO (SE26)
  • Upminster DO (RM14)
  • Upton DO (CH30 and CH49)
  • Warrington DO (WA1 to WA2 and WA4 to WA5)
  • Willesden DO (NW10 and NW26)

The postal service has 1,200 offices, so most of its operations remain unaffected by the disruption.
