Andover firm Uplifts surveys over 50s views on romance

The research, conducted by Andover firm Uplifts, challenges stereotypes about older adults being less romantically inclined.

The study of more than 1,000 individuals found that love and passion continue to thrive in later life.

Despite societal misconceptions, only 37 per cent of respondents recognised these age-related stereotypes, while 95 per cent affirmed that romance transcends age boundaries.

The survey also found that 74 per cent of respondents feel more liberated to express themselves romantically, and 34 per cent do not find maintaining romance after 50 challenging.

Additionally, 16 per cent value romance more now than when they were younger.

When asked which cultural figures inspire their approach to love, respondents named Richard Gere, Bridget Jones and Dorien Green from Birds of a Feather.

Lesley Joseph, who portrayed Dorien Green, said: “Confidence is key. Life is for living at every age – in fact, seizing opportunities and embracing new adventures becomes even more rewarding when you feel secure and comfortable in your own home.”

The research also highlighted the role of a comfortable and accessible home in fostering confidence and independence.

Uplifts found that simple home adaptations can significantly impact quality of life and relationships.

For instance, installing a homelift can transform a house into a fully accessible space, removing barriers to movement and allowing couples to enjoy every part of their home together.

The findings offer a new perspective on romance in later life, suggesting that meaningful connections and romantic expression continue to be important aspects of life for many adults over 50.
