The mania for painting things yellow in the Almondbury area has now seen a car spray-painted in addition to a much-loved police box and a Royal Mail post box too.
Kirklees councillor Alison Munro, (Almondbury, Lib Dem), photographed the latest item, a snazzy-looking motor parked on Wakefield Road by the petrol station at Fenay Bridge. The car’s bodywork, windows and wheels have all been painted.
The craze began in the run-up to the local elections earlier this month with someone calling himself The Green Pimpernel painting post boxes in the area lime-green and later turquoise and yellow. In a letter to ExaminerLive the self-styled Yorkshire Banksy claimed it was a matter of “artistic expression” and was merely brightening up “dilapidated post boxes within Kirklees that have not seen a lick of paint for years.”

But what caused most outrage appears to have been the painting yellow of the police box on Northgate in Almondbury. Kirklees councillor Bernard McGuin, who also represents Almondbury was disgusted to see the wooden police box had been partially painted bright yellow. It dates back to the 1920s or 1930s, is made of timber and was listed in 1987.
Of the car being repainted, Clr Munro said: “It’s really worrying to see more criminal damage being done and let’s hope the police catch the persons responsible. It is very disappointing to see this kind of criminal damage continuing.”
But not everyone was sympathetic to her thoughts when she posted a picture of the car on her Facebook page with one man saying it “should be moved anyway. It’s just an advertising hoarding.”
