Appeal after thieves steal ‘sentimental’ bicycle in Bromley

A cyclist was chased by a driver and four youths on electric scooters before his bicycle was stolen in Bromley on Sunday (November 28).

Matthew Sparkes, in his 30s, was returning from a swim in Beckenham Place Park when the pursuit began at around 1.20pm on Farmfield Road, continuing onto Valeswood Road.

The group caught up with him on Downham Way, taking hold of his Genesis Smithfield Borough, before fleeing.

Matthew said: “I was riding home from a swim in the lake at Beckenham Place Park so I was so frozen that by the time I realised what was happening it was all over.

“At least I managed to save my wet swimming trunks. Silver lining!”

Matthew is appealing for anyone who sees the “very sentimental” bicycle, which has a Royal Mail box on the front, to come forward.

The car was a black Audi S3, driven by a man.

The theft was reported to police, who are investigating.

A spokesperson said: “Police are investigating a report of a robbery that occurred at 1.23pm on Sunday, November 28, in Valeswood Road, Bromley.

“It was reported that a man aged his 30s was approached by a group of people who stole his bike.

“Enquiries are ongoing. There have been no arrests.”
