The American Philatelic Society Writers Unit No. 30 named Everett L. Parker, Scott R. Trepel and the late Robert J. Stets Sr. to its hall of fame, the group’s president Lloyd de Vries announced in an Oct. 1 press release.
Parker is a former journalist, newspaper publisher, business owner, museum director, archaeologist, tour company operator and ordained minister, as well as an expert on the stamps of the Pitcairn Islands.
He edited the Pitcairn Islands Study Group’s journal, Pitcairn Log, for more than three decades, and he wrote five books on the British overseas territory’s mail service and history. He is also president of the Maine Philatelic Society and editor of its journal, The Maine Philatelist.
Trepel is president of the prestigious Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries firm and has presided over the sales of many famous philatelic items. His auction catalogs incorporate a wealth and depth of information, including census data and historical research.
Trepel has also published research articles in philatelic journals and has written books about the City Despatch Post, the Pony Express and the Benjamin K. Miller collection of the New York Public Library. Among his most recent honors is the Smithsonian philatelic achievement award in 2023.
Stets was born in 1916 and died in 2016. During that century, he wrote scores of articles on subjects ranging from the postal history of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and the Carolinas to the railway post office and sprayed-on postal markings.
He wrote almost a dozen books on equally diverse topics and was executive director of the Interphil 1976 international stamp exhibition in Philadelphia.
The names of the honorees are to be displayed along with other hall of fame members listed on a plaque at the American Philatelic Research Library in Bellefonte, Pa. The Writers Unit announces new inductees to the philatelic writers hall of fame each year at the Great American Stamp Show.
This year Cheryl Ganz chaired the hall of fame committee, which included Trish Kaufmann and Hal Vogel.
The APS Writers Unit No. 30 was organized in 1967 and has published the quarterly journal The Philatelic Communicator since 1968. The group supports various philatelic literature competitions, including the literature grand award at the Great American Stamp Show.
Membership is open to all philatelic writers, columnists, editors, publishers and anyone interested in philatelic communication, whether print or digital.
