Royal Mail employees have been striking at the end of what has been a summer of widespread industrial action and the strikes are set to cause far-reaching delivery disruption over September.
On Friday, more than 115,000 members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) went on strike outside Royal Mail offices up and down the UK.
The unions are planning further postal strikes for the coming weeks, however strikes will not be taking place on Monday 29 August.
When is the next Royal Mail Strike?
Members are set to continue striking on various days in the next few weeks:
- Wednesday 31 August
- Thursday 8 September
- Friday 9 September
The union is demanding that workers get a pay rise in line with the soaring inflation, and have subsequently rejected a pay rise offer “worth up to 5.5 per cent” after three months of talks.
Dave Ward, CWU general secretary, said: “Nobody takes the decision to strike lightly, but postal workers are being pushed to the brink.”
Ricky McAulay, operations director at Royal Mail, meanwhile accused the union of failing to engage in “any meaningful discussion” after months of talks.
Will the Post Office be shut on Monday?
Local post office branches should be open if the attached retail business is open on a bank holiday.
The Post Office website adds: “If you are a Main Post Office branch, you are contracted to open your Post Office at the combined retail counter… during your retail business opening hours on a Bank Holiday.”
But again it is always best to check before you set off.
Although there will not be any strike action on Monday, and post offices will remain for the most part open, deliveries could still be impacted by the strikes.
The Post Office said: “We’ll be working to keep services running, but you should expect significant disruption on strike days.
“Please post items as early as possible in advance of the strike dates. Items posted the day before, during, or in the days after any strike will be subject to delay.”
The Post Office urged customers to continue to post items at post boxes or Post Offices, but be aware collections will be less frequent on days when strike action is taking place
