Are there any Royal Mail strikes in January 2023?

Royal Mail strikes caused huge disruption over the Christmas period, but are there any more walkouts in January 2023?

There was industrial action on seven dates in December, including Christmas Eve, with thousands of workers who belong to the Communication Workers Union (CWU) walking out.

This followed a 48-hour strike over Black Friday on November 24 and 25, which is always one of the biggest shopping and postal days of the year.

Are there more Royal Mail strikes in January 2023?

No, there are no more planned strikes in January or the rest of 2023 while writing this. However, more could be planned as the CWU is still in dispute with Royal Mail.

In November, Royal Mail offered its “best and final offer” of a 9% pay deal over 18 months and other benefits, but the union rejected it immediately.

Prior to that, the CWU also rejected an offer that included a 7% salary increase over two years and a lump sum payment of 2%.

The strikes will only end when Royal Mail offer workers a deal the CWU is willing to accept, or the union decides to back down.

If more are planned, Royal Mail’s strikes page will be updated with the latest info.

Workers want a bigger pay rise

The CWU has rejected Royal Maik’s deals as they want a pay rise that “fully addresses the current cost of living”.

They say the pay dispute is “not complicated” on their website and add: “Our members need it, our members deserve it – the company can afford it.”

However, in July, Royal Mail chairman Keith Williams claimed the company was losing a staggering £1 million per day.

The CWU is in dispute with Royal Mail as its members have had an unagreed two per cent pay deal imposed on them.

“This is at a time when RPI inflation is currently running at 11.8 per cent and when Royal Mail has announced Group profits of £758 million and when the company is paying out many millions to private shareholders,” they said.

Workers voted by a 97.6 per cent majority to take industrial action.
