Workers who belong to the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) union and National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) are striking across three days in May and June:
- Friday, May 12 (ASLEF)
- Saturday, May 13 (RMT)
- Wednesday, May 31 (ASLEF)
- Saturday, June 3 (ASLEF)
The ASLEF strikes will affect the following 15 rail companies:
- Avanti West Coast
- Chiltern
- CrossCountry
- East Midlands
- Great Western
- Greater Anglia
- GTR Great Northern Thameslink
- LNER
- Northern
- Southeastern
- Southern/Gatwick Express
- SWR (depot drivers)
- Island Line
- TransPennine Express
- West Midland
The RMT strike on May 13 will also affect 14 companies across Britain.
ASLEF and RMT reject pay deals
The new industrial action comes as ASELF and the RMT have both rejected offers on pay and working conditions from the Rail Delivery Group.
“The proposal – of just 4% – was clearly not designed to be accepted as inflation is still running north of 10% and our members at these companies have not had an increase for four years,” ASLEF said.
“Consequently, we have today announced three more days of strike action at the companies with which we are in dispute, and which are letting down passengers, and taxpayers, so badly.”
The RMT then followed, announcing: “Rail union, RMT will launch strike action across 14 train operators on May 13th after rejecting the latest offer from the Rail Delivery Group.”
The strikes are expected to cause severe disruption as May 13 is the day of the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool and June 3 is the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
