Are we about to lose forever the pleasure of a handwritten letter?

The postman hardly ever comes to call and when he does he usually drops someone else's mail into my box, and mine presumably into theirs. What on earth are Royal Mail thinking by preparing to charge whatever they like to deliver a first class letter?
