Free returns are not a statutory right when shopping online. Although you are legally entitled to return (most) good bought online, the delivery cost of the return does not have to be met by the retailers.
Boohoo has recently followed in Zara’s footsteps and started to issue a charge for returning items. The fast-fashion retailer will now charge £1.99 to return items, with the amount taken off the refund before it is issued.
Consumer website Which? States: “You must cover the delivery cost for returning unwanted goods, unless the retailer says it will pay for returns. Some retailers offer free returns labels, so you don’t have to pay to return. We recommend you get proof of postage, just in case the retailer later disputes you’ve returned your goods.”

Just in case you aren’t quite sure about what you are planning to buy, here are five big online retailers that offer free returns:
Asos
Asos offer free returns to their customers in the UK. All you have to do is log into your account, go to “My Orders” and “Create Return.” You can select the items you’re returning and tell them why.
From there, you’ll be able to locate your nearest drop-off point and create a QR code by pressing “Place return.”
Missguided
Missguided’s current returns policy does not include charges for returns. The fashion retailer says that customers have from 14 days after delivery to make a return through the online account. The items must then be returned within 28 days.
M&S
M&S also encourage customers to return items in-store. However, it is also possible to return via Royal Mail or Everi.
They list a three-step process:
- Go to ‘Orders & Returns’ in your account
- Find your order and click ‘Return item(s).’
- Select your preferred way to return. You’ll see steps for what to do next plus your relevant returns barcode.
You can then use that barcode to retrieve a label from your local Everi parcel shop or Post Office.

Very
Very’s return process is slightly longer than the others. However, they still state that it is free, if under their approval guarantee:
- Fill in the advice note that came in your parcel with a reason for return for each of the items you are returning.
- Place this advice note and all the items you are returning in your parcel. This is really important to help us process your refund quickly.
- Visit ‘Returns’ in My Account if you are on our website or ‘My Orders’ if you are using our app.
- Select the items you would like to return, select a reason for return for each item, and click ‘Confirm selection’.
- On the next page, you can choose your return method by selecting either Collect+ or Royal Mail then click ‘Arrange Return’.
- On the next page, click to ‘copy your account number’ and then click ‘Create your label’, this will take you to either the Collect+ or Royal Mail website to create your label, follow the steps on screen to generate a QR code and a label. It’s important that you accurately add your account number and email address at this step so the QR code and label are created correctly and you refund can be processed.
- We’ll send an email confirming your return and Collect+ or Royal Mail will send you a separate email with your QR code and label attached.
- Take your parcel along to a Collect+ store or Post Office. Your label will be printed out for you and attached to your parcel by the store assistant, or if you prefer, you can print your label out at home and attach it yourself.
- Please keep your proof of return safe.
