Away from home on the 4th July? Here’s how you can still vote

There’s just three weeks to go until the General Election, which falls in the summer holiday period. But don’t worry if you will be away from home on July 4, you can still vote, writes Grace Clift.

If you’re away from home on polling day this year, or just can’t make it to the polling station, there’s still multiple ways to vote.

Don’t miss out on the chance to have your say this summer; read on for the key dates to know.

Firstly, you can vote by post. You’ll need to apply for a postal vote by 5pm on June 16.

Once approved, you’ll receive a postal voting pack with your ballot paper inside of it ahead of polling day.

Your vote will need to be with your local council by 10pm on polling day, so it’s best to post as soon as completed.

Another way you can vote is by proxy, meaning someone else can cast your vote on your behalf.

To vote by proxy, you need to apply by 5pm on June 26.

Postal voting packs are sent out via Royal Mail approximately ten working days before the election, therefore, a proxy may be a more suitable solution if you are going away on holiday.

It’s also a good time to check if you have a form of photo ID – this could be a driving licence, a passport, a Blue Badge, or a number of other forms of ID.

You must bring this with you on polling day to vote in person, otherwise you will be turned away.
