Balenciaga have released a ‘high-end’ fashionable football top for $780

Imagine paying 600 quid to look like Lee Cattermole in a 2001 Dortmund training top

Trendy edgelords Balenciaga have outdone themselves yet again by releasing a ‘fashionable’ football jersey that will only set you back $780 dollars. That works out at just under £600.

Yeah, seriously.

This top is meant to blur the line between sport and streetwear, making it appropriate attire for going out (presumably for a tour of all the graffiti on Brick Lane) and then, apparently, playing football.

You can probably find some five-a-side kit that won’t take a couple of weeks’ wages off you, though.

Fashion website Hypebeast.com say:

“It’s made from mid-weight premium cotton that’s cut wide and boxy, featuring drop shoulders and a stand collar to help it further blur the line between sportswear and streetwear-indebted luxury.”

Not really sure what those words mean. This just looks like a Borussia Dortmund training top from the time they still had Lars Ricken working the channels.

Who wore it better, though?

Discussing the creative ideation behind this design, Balenciaga themselves say it “takes inspiration from Demna Gvasalia’s childhood in Georgia.”

You can only presume Gvasalia is a previously-unearthed Football Manager wonderkid who was snapped up by Cagliari after breaking into the Dinamo Tbilisi first team.

“It’s crafted from cotton jersey with white panels, then finished with various sports-inspired branding that form the crest, sponsor and player name. Temper the oversized silhouette by tucking it into jeans – choose a wide-leg pair to continue the directional mood.”

Now, I think I know what they are talking about. They are looking to rekindle an iconic style from years gone by. Something which makes a statement – the very height of football fashion.

That’s right.

Balenciaga are clearly referring to Cristiano Ronaldo and Kleberson’s unveiling at Manchester United.

This isn’t the first time Balenciaga have taken a rather ‘avant garde’ approach to high-end fashion.

Who can forget the infamous ‘T-Shirt Shirt’? Which makes you look like you’ve been swept up by a tornado and dragged head first through your neighbour’s washing line?

If that’s not your cup of tea, then what about the ‘Dry Clean Normal Fit Shirt’?

This can only be described as a Royal Mail hessian sack with buttons and a collar. So if you don’t fancy walking to the pub, perhaps you might like to post yourself there instead.
