Barrow: MP slams ‘inadequacy’ of Royal Mail postal services

MP for Barrow and Furness, Michelle Scrogham, has written to the chief executive of Royal Mail, Emma Gilthorpe, to raise concerns over the quality of postal services in her constituency.

Mrs Scrogham said the current situation ‘cannot be allowed’ to continue and requested a meeting to discuss how the company aim to ‘turn the situation’ around in the area.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said ‘recruitment challenges’ have had an impact in the Barrow and Furness constituency and the company are recruiting for permanent positions.

The letter from the Labour MP reads: “Over the last few months I have grown increasingly concerned over the quality of postal deliveries locally.

“This follows receiving complaints from many constituents describing irregular and unreliable first and second class post and parcels.

“Our communities rely on postal services as part of everyday life. I have been contacted by numerous residents waiting an unacceptable amount of time for their post.”

The MP said local people use the postal service to arrange medical appointments, pay bills and manage legal documents.

Mrs Scrogham added she has raised ongoing problems with Royal Mail, but added the quality of the service seems to have ‘deteriorated’ in recent weeks.

A spokesperson for the company said: “While no post has been delayed for more than two days, recruitment challenges have unfortunately had an impact on deliveries in the Barrow and Furness constituency.

“We are currently recruiting for permanent positions in the area.

“We are responding to Ms Scrogham’s letter separately and are happy to meet with her to discuss this further.”
