The BBC, Tesco and Royal Mail are among 600 employers who have signed a pledge to make workplaces “menopause friendly”.
Companies have recently begun adopting policies including paying for employees’ hormone replacement therapy (HRT) prescriptions and allowing staff paid menopause leave.
Research shows there are nearly a million working-age women who have quit their jobs because of the menopause, which usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. Others among the five million menopausal working women have reduced their hours or turned down promotion.
The Countess of Wessex launched a campaign to halt the “tragic” brain drain of menopausal women six months ago. Since then hundreds of companies have signed the “menopause workforce pledge”, created by the charity Wellbeing of Women.
