Beloved Tunbridge Wells puppy ‘ripped apart’ by sharp iron bars on Southborough Common

A family’s “beloved, sweet” dog aged just nine months has died after “two sharp iron bars” protruding from the ground on Southborough Common ripped through her body.

Koba died last week (December 22) after the horrific incident while on a walk close to St Peter’s Church.

Her devastated family drove to the vet with their pet, which was dying from terrible injuries including broken ribs and ruptured lungs, pancreas, spleen, diaphragm and stomach.

Owner Ameet Bhakta said his wife tried desperately to hold poor Koba’s organs inside her on the journey to the vet.

Mr Bhakta is so worried children or other dogs will be hurt or killed, he has started a petition calling on Southborough Town Council to “act immediately”.

He said the bars are on a ridge and at an angle, “so if a dog or child is running up they won’t seem them in time”.

He said: “Hundreds of local people walk with their dogs and children in Southborough Common ever day. We would like Southborough Town Council to act immediately to remove this death trap which could kill other dogs and our local kids.”

“We would also like them to investigate how this was allowed to occur and if other sites like this exist within Southborough Common.”

Mr Bhakta’s warning on Facebook has alarmed the community, with one saying she was “bawling my eyes out”.

One person wrote: “You don’t need a petition, get a sledge hammer and bash it to the ground.”

Another said the bars looked as though they were the remnants of an old bench.

It would seem swift action has been taken by the council.

Well-known councillor Ian Kinghorn, who saw the post, has written: “I informed the council who sent our workmen to make safe the area.”

Anyone who wants to sign the petition, which also calls for the town council to investigate other areas, press here.
