Bender UK installs new theatre at Lancaster Royal Infirmary

A NEW £2.5 million modular state-of-the-art operating theatre and recovery area at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary is equipped with a safe and resilient critical power system from Bender UK.

Ulverston-based Bender UK also supplied specialised theatre equipment including LED operating lights, services pendants supplying medical gases, power and data, the theatre touchscreen panel which controls theatre services, and the large hi-def PACS screen for viewing patient scans, X-rays and other images.

The new theatre was built to provide capacity that enables four existing operating theatres at the RLI to be refurbished and upgraded without disrupting clinical activity. The project was managed by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust Capital Services Team.

The firm is a preferred supplier for ModuleCo Healthcare which manufactured the complete theatre unit offsite before the building was delivered in sections and craned into place.

Once the operating theatres refurbishment programme is complete the modular theatre – which has a lifespan of 20 years – will continue to provide additional flexibility for patient care. The completion of the new modular theatre means that there are now seven operating theatres in Lancaster – five main theatres and two theatres in the Women’s Unit. The new theatre is sited between the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) and the existing operating theatres.

To provide power for ‘Group 2’ critical care areas safeguarding patients and staff, Bender UK supplied a medical IT/Isolated Power System for the new modular unit, together with a battery-back-up uninterruptible power system for added resilience.

In the operating theatre, Bender supplied award-winning Q-Flow™ LED operating lights from Merivaara incorporating a wireless HD camera. The circular design of the lights enables an optimum flow of clean air to reach the site of the operation from the overhead ultra-clean air canopy, reducing the potential for patient infections.

Kate Maynard, Chief Operating Officer for the Trust, said: “The new theatre will enable us to retain our operating capacity while important upgrading work is taking place. We can now offer a significantly enhanced experience to patients who come to us for surgical care. We now have an operating theatre that has the most advanced technology and design to ensure the highest levels of safety, care, experience and performance.”

Bender UK has provided equipment for upgrades of theatres at Furness General Hospital in Barrow and Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal. Bender UK also supports the Trust with a service and maintenance package for equipment and Group 2 critical power systems.
