Bid for Barrow royal town status under consideration

A campaign for the Royal family to confer the status on the borough led to an official application being submitted to King Charles III.

The bid to make the town royal was put forward to the Cabinet Office for review.

A spokesman for the Cabinet Office said an announcement would follow when a decision was made.

Barrow’s former MP Simon Fell was pushing for royal town status in a campaign that had the backing of community groups and businesses.

He emphasised the town’s history and the pivotal part it has played in the UK’s industrial and maritime achievements.

The former MP believed that with Barrow entering a new chapter with the AUKUS partnership, and with the town being the backbone for the delivery of the next generation on attack submarines for the US and Australia, it was time for Barrow to get royal recognition.

Requests for the Royal title are made for various reasons and cities, towns, boroughs and hospitals can apply, along with businesses, in certain circumstances.

Petitions either come directly from the Prime Minister or are made through the Cabinet Office.

Ultimately, it is the reigning monarch who decides based on the advice of ministers.

Asking for support earlier in the year, Mr Fell wrote to the then prime minster Rishi Sunak who offered warm words for the campaign.

Mr Sunak said: “Barrow-in-Furness has a long and proud history of shipbuilding, contributing greatly towards the continued protection of our shores and those of our allies.

“I am pleased that Barrow-in-Furness will play an important role in delivering key aspects of our AUKUS partnership.

“I know that, given its legacy, the profile of Barrow’s skill, innovation and dedication will be raised internationally through its port of AUKUS.”

The Prime Minister went on to call Mr Fell’s proposal ‘touching’ and thanked him for including letters from supporters.

Organisations including the Barrow Business Improvement District and Barrow AFC have also offered support to the campaign.
