Emmeline got a text from what she thought was Royal Mail

Emmeline Hartley’s sharing her story about falling victim to a Royal Mail text scam, in a bid to stop others doing the same.

The Birmingham drama student got a text, the day before her birthday, from what she thought was “Royal Mail” which said she needed to pay an additional postage fee, in order to receive a delivery.

She clicked on the link and told us “I had 2% battery, and I wanted to get it done quickly, I assumed it was going to be delivered the next day for my birthday and I’d forget to do it later”

“I did check things and when it did ask for my sort code and account number, I thought it was a red flag, but I didn’t think anything of it, as stupid as it sounds now.

“I wasn’t really thinking.”

The next day, on her birthday, the 28-year-old got a call from a man claiming to be from her bank.

She was told “there had been some activity on your card in Essex, and we know you’re in Birmingham”

She was then persuaded to transfer all her money to a new account, set up to protect her.
