SUPERSTAR LETTER WRITER: Milan Paul Kumar, 11, from Bolton began his letter-writing hobby during lockdown
A kind-hearted 11-year-old boy from Bolton has been praised for his efforts in his hobby of letter-writing and making senior citizen pen pals. Milan Paul Kumar, 11, from Bolton, has won national awards for his letter writing and also received a young person of the year award after being nominated by local care homes.
Milan became pen pals with 15 residents in care homes across the UK during lockdown as part of the National Literacy Trust’s ‘MyDearNewFriend’ scheme to combat isolation and loneliness among older adults. Even today, Milan continues to write and visit his pen pals.
Milan said: “I love letter writing. I have so much in common with my pen pals such as sport, pets, travelling and food. I also write about school, hobbies and trips I have been on. I have recently started writing to Ukrainian children, who I met on a recent trip to Poland, they hope to return to Ukraine when the war ends.”

Pete Kenny, 89, was Milan’s first pen pal. Milan began writing to him during lockdown, and these days also visits him on a regular basis. It’s a friendship built through the power of letter writing.
Milan has won national awards for his letter writing, volunteering and fundraising. He was presented with a medal at the Palace of Westminster and recently met the Prime Minister for his efforts.
The young boy was also nominated as Bolton News Young Person of the Year by the local care homes for his letter writing. He is also a Diana Award Recipient and an #iwill Ambassador for his social action in the community.
This summer, a challenge launched by Royal Mail is encouraging children to put pen to paper and get involved in all aspects of letter and postcard sending. Creative children can use the pre-designed templates providing a little helping hand with some extra structure, or go wild with a basic outline and space for all their imagination can conjure up. You can also use plain paper.
To help get the creative juices flowing, letter-fan Milan, age 11, and Postie Terry will have weekly videos to tell you about all the fun things, from super stamps to how Royal Mail put letters inside huge machines to get them from postbox to your letterbox. There’s a fun challenge to complete each week, and a chart to follow your progress to becoming a superstar letter writer, along with 10 big prizes of £50 voucher codes for the Postal Museum’s online shop.
