Boris Johnson, booze, strikes and shopping substitutions – the most commented stories of 2022

There is no doubt that 2022 has been a very eventful year.

The national news has been flooded with major events such as Boris Johnson’s resignation and the election of two new Prime Ministers in the space of just over a month. The death of Queen Elizabeth II left the world in mourning and the country got a new King in her son Charles.

We also had heatwaves that brought scorching temperatures to the UK, England’s women football team won the Euros and soaring prices contributed to a harsh cost of living crisis. There have also been significant international events, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

LancsLive was there to report on all the major events affecting the county and beyond. But it’s sometimes surprising to see what topics catch our readers’ attention.

We have compiled a list of the most commented on articles of 2022. Here is what got our readers talking.

Do you think Boris Johnson should return as PM?

Back in October, the website Conservative Post had gathered more than 10,000 signatures for its petition to get Boris Johnson to replace Liz Truss as Prime Minister. Of course, we now know that it wasn’t to be, and that Rishi Sunak was indeed to become the first Hindu PM of the UK.

But at the time, the prospect of Mr Johnson returning to lead the country, certainly caused a stir. It’s fair to say, in our comments section it was an even split between those saying that a ‘leopard never changes his spots’ and those calling for the Conservative Party to ‘bring back Boris’.

Do you support the Royal Mail workers’ strike?

In more recent times, we asked our readers how they felt about Royal Mail workers walking out. The strikes, scheduled to take place in the run-up to Christmas, aimed to achieve better pay and conditions for postal workers.

Once again, our readers were split, with some comments showing solidarity to members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and others claiming the workers were ‘already overpaid’ and that the strikes were ‘ruining Royal Mail’.

Mum, 35, embarrassed after being refused alcohol in Aldi while shopping with kids – because ‘they thought she was their mate’

In November we covered the story of 35-year-old Kelly Marsh, who went to her local Aldi store in Buckshaw Village for a few bits of shopping. But she was left gobsmacked when she was told she couldn’t buy bottles of lager and Newcastle Brown Ale – unless her children also showed ID.

Staff initially believed Kelly was a friend of her children Courtney, 17, and Bethany, 15, rather than their mum. But when a manager backed up the cashier’s decision, Kelly, who lives in Preston, said she was eventually banned from returning to the store.

The story generated dozens of comments, with many backing up the store’s decision and saying the cashier was ‘just doing their job’. However, others hit out at the ‘far-fetched’ decision to ban the shopper.

M61 driver says police stop ‘not fair’ after testing positive for cannabis twice in 18 days

Another story that caught the attention of LancsLive’s readers was about a Mercedes driver who was travelling on the M61 and tested positive for cannabis for the second time in a month. According to the police, the driver said that being stopped twice in one month ‘wasn’t fair’.

But readers took exception to this motorist’s attitude, with many pointing out that if they had abided by the rules in the first place, they would not have had a problem. Many also pointed out that the only unfair thing about the situation, was that they were potentially putting others at risk by driving with cannabis in their system.

Sainsbury’s shopper left in stitches by the substitute for a £1.65 box of eggs

As the country faced an egg shortage, one Sainsbury customer was left in stitches after she found a bizarre substitution in her delivery. The woman said she had ordered eggs from Sainsbury’s via UberEats as she likes some scrambled eggs in the morning.

She said: “I didn’t receive any notifications to let me know they were out of stock so was bemused when I saw the egg custard tarts and twigged it was a substitute when I realised the eggs were missing. I burst out laughing as I have hated custard since school dinner days.”

Readers took to the comments’ section to share their tales of woe with supermarket substitutions. One reader said a ‘Matey’ bubblebath for the kids, was swapped for a packet of ‘Mates’ condoms.

Another who ordered gluten free burgers, found they had been given meat free burgers instead – which are not gluten free!
