Boy, eight, who died after being shot in head on farm named for first time

An eight-year-old who died after being shot in the head on Saturday has been named. Jay Cartmell of Frizington in West Cumbria was killed in an incident near Warcop on Saturday.

He died after sustaining serious head injuries in an incident on land not far from the A66, north of Warcop. Police officers are continuing with their enquiries into this incident.

A spokesman said: “As officers continue with their enquiries into this incident, they are encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or the moments leading up to it to come forward.” Emergency services went to the scene on Saturday afternoon following reports that a child had sustained ‘serious and life-threatening injuries’ from a firearm.

The boy was taken to hospital by air ambulance, but police said on Sunday morning that he had died overnight. A force spokesperson said on Sunday: “Emergency services were called at around 2.50pm yesterday to a farm in the Warcop area following a report that a child had been seriously injured by a firearm at the property. Police and NWAS (North West Ambulance Service) attended.

“The firearm was secured at the scene by police and an eight-year-old boy was taken to hospital by air ambulance having suffered serious and life-threatening injuries to his head and face. Sadly, the boy has died overnight.

“Officers arrested a man in his 60s at the scene on suspicion of assault GBH. He remains in police custody, but is now under arrest on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.”
