Brent Knoll village petitions Royal Mail to restore post box

Residents have been heading to Brent Knoll Community Shop to press for a postbox outside and the return of postal services.

Brent Knoll Community Shop is entirely run by volunteers, and launched as an ’emergency shop’ six years ago, following the closure of their village shop and Post Office.

In December 2024, the Brent Knoll Community Shop moved into a new purpose-built premises on Brent Street after operating for years from a Portakabin in the village car park.

The shop said it is run entirely by more than 30 volunteers and has secured more than 160 share-buying members.

Now the volunteers are urging villagers to join the campaign to get Royal Mail to install a replacement postbox.

They also want the community shop to bring back some of the Post Office services the village has lost.

The petition is in the Brent Knoll News magazine, and signed copies are being collected at the community shop.

David Sturgess, secretary of Brent Knoll Community Shop, said: “Brent Knoll’s Parish Council is also pressing for the installation of a post box to replace the one removed from the former village shop.

We are all eager to restore some of the postal services that we’ve lost.”

The Royal Mail has said that it is ‘aware’ of the petition and appreciates residents sharing their views.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We recognise how important local post boxes and postal services are to communities such as Brent Knoll.

“We are aware of the petition and appreciate residents taking the time to share their views.

“We understand why this matters to the community and respect the efforts being made locally to highlight the issue.”
