Tens of thousands of small British firms are being crippled by new Brexit red tape that is wiping out their European sales, business leaders have warned.
Since the start of the year any UK company selling to a customer in the EU has to pay VAT and in some cases import duty. They also have to pay new charges imposed by shipping and courier companies to deal with the additional paperwork as a result of sending goods across the border.
Many businesses that have grown using platforms such as Amazon and eBay are pulling out of selling to EU customers, saying that the costs and bureaucracy have made it uneconomic.
